I am Katia. Katia Demyanova. I have been painting for more than thirty years.

Katia Demyanova is a painter who lives and works in Lanciano, in Abruzzo, Italy. She has painted for more than thirty years, mostly in oil: the Adriatic coast, Italian hill towns, gardens and still lifes. She trained for ten years in the Moscow atelier of the avant-garde painter Yuri Zlotnikov, then with Aleksei Kamensky, and in the 1990s at the École des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris.

In artistic expression there are themes that have always held an important place, and for me these are borders. The border between sleep and the real, between light and shadow, between the figurative and the abstract. That is what matters most.

In my paintings you see trees, houses, the sea and the sky, sometimes people too. But there is no point counting the tiles on the roofs or the olives in the garden: the detail no longer exists. I have a series of paintings, “Disappearing Objects”: the objects are still there, still present, even recognisable, but for how much longer? Who knows. For me this is a border between the concrete and the abstract, the most vulnerable and the most interesting position.

So painting for me is like a bridge, a bridge you walk across with your impressions, which you have to transform somehow. Perhaps this is also a metaphor for life itself, but that is too sad.

And to speak of concrete things: ten years of study in the atelier of the Russian avant-garde artist Yuri Zlotnikov, then some years with another great Russian artist, Aleksei Kamensky, and in the 1990s the École des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris. Now, after many years of endless travel with my husband between Italy and Russia, sadly with many borders between the two countries, we have chosen Italy and moved to Lanciano, a miraculous town.
